NATURE OF EXERCISE:
This is an interactive exercise designed to increase your ability to make visual distinctions based on size/area/territory. To make this exercise more challenging than the Beginner's version (Exercise 8), upon the random on-screen appearance of the word REVERSAL, you must give the reverse of the correct answer. This shift in momentum, called "task shifting" in psychology, or mental flexibility in real life, actually requires high order cognitive processing to perform quickly.
RELEVANCE TO EVERYDAY LIFE:
We are constantly faced with situations wherein we must make a quick decision based upon size/area/territory. These range from the trivial (which slice of pizza is larger?) to the recreational (in football, is the hole larger off left tackle or right tackle?) to the critical (do I have enough room to pass this slow-moving car?).
INSTRUCTIONS:
In this exercise, you will be presented with a diamond-shaped figure that is divided into 64 equal-sized red and yellow diamonds. If the majority of diamonds are red, then press and release the RIGHT ARROW key on your keyboard as quickly as possible. If the majority of diamonds are yellow, then press and release the LEFT ARROW key on your keyboard as quickly as possible. If the word REVERSAL appears, then press the LEFT ARROW key for red or the RIGHT ARROW key for yellow. As you respond correctly, the number of diamonds in the predominant color will decrease, thus making the exercise more difficult.
Please note that Reaction Time plays only a minimal role in the scoring of this exercise. Runs with lower Perceptual Thresholds will always have higher scores than runs with higher Perceptual Thresholds. Reaction Time will only serve as a tiebreaker in runs with identical Perceptual Thresholds.
You must respond correctly 20 times to complete the exercise.
